보수적인 조선일보는 사설에서 논했다 (1월 21일): “오바마 대통령의 최우선 과제인 경제 회복은 그것이 국제적인 협력이라는 틀 안에서 추구될 때 동력을 얻을 수 있다. 최근, 힐러리 클린턴 국무장관을 비롯한 오바마 행정부 내의 주요 인사들은 미국 자동차 산업을 보호한다는 구실로 한미 FTA를 재협상할 필요가 있다고 제기했는데 이것은 새로운 미 행정부가 ‘보호주의’로 향하고 있다는 염려를 유발한다. 1934년의 대공황에서 보여졌듯이 국가 간의 경쟁적인 보호주의는 경제 위기를 악화시킬 뿐이다. 미국은 개방적인 세계 무역 체계를 창조하는데 지도력을 보여야 한다. 북한 핵 문제도 마찬가지이다. 북한은 이미 새로운 미 대통령의 취임 시기에 맞춰 세계의 관심을 끌기 위한 다양한 제스처를 해 왔다. 서울과 워싱턴은 핵 문제와 한-미 동맹에 대한 새로운 비전에 대해 대화를 시작하는데 시간 낭비를 해서는 안 된다.”

Conservative Chosun Ilbo editorialized (01/21): “President Obama's top priority, economic recovery, can gain momentum when it is pursued within the framework of international cooperation. Recently, important figures in the Obama Administration, including Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton, raised the need to renegotiate the KORUS FTA on the pretext of protecting the U.S. auto industry, sparking concerns that the new U.S. administration might be headed for 'protectionism.' As seen in the Great Depression in 1934, competitive protectionism among countries only aggravates an economic crisis. The U.S. should show leadership in creating a more open global trade system. The same goes for the North Korean
nuclear issue. North Korea has already made various gestures to bring itself to the world's attention in time for the inauguration of the new U.S. president. Seoul and Washington must waste no time in beginning talks over the nuclear issue and a new vision for the ROK-U.S. alliance.”

중도 우파인 중앙일보는 사설에서 논했다 (1월 21일): “한국인들에게는 북한 핵 문제와 계류중인 한미FTA 가 최고의 관심사이다. 미국은 한국과 가까운 협력을 통해서 또 동시에 강한 외교적 입장을 채택함으로써 북한의 핵 문제를 균형 있게 해결하도록 노력해야 한다. 오바마 행정부는 상호 무역 협정의 비준과 보호주의를 추구하는 것이 미 국익과 한-미 동맹의 정신에 도움이 될지에 대해 결정할 필요가 있다.”

“Good Luck, President Obama”

Right-of-center JoongAng Ilbo editorialized (01/21): “For Koreans, the North Korea nuclear issue and the pending KORUS FTA are of the utmost interest. The U.S. should try to balance resolving the North's nuclear issue through close cooperation with the ROK while at the same time adopting a tough diplomatic stance. The Obama Administration needs to decide whether delaying ratification of the bilateral trade deal and pursuing protectionism will serve U.S. national interests and the spirit of the ROK-U.S. alliance.”


오바마 시대에 대한 높은 기대감

Moderate Hankook Ilbo editorialized (01/21): “The reason why countries around the world welcome Obama's inauguration is that they sincerely hope that he will overcome the economic crisis and lead the world toward peace and stability by realizing his slogan of 'bold hope' and 'change.'”


“새 미국, 새 세계”

“A New America, A New World”

Left-leaning Hankyoreh Shinmun editorialized (01/21): “As noted by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton, the North Korean nuclear issue is an “urgent” one. Officials from the Obama camp are said to share a favorable view of resolving pending North Korean issues comprehensively, which range from dismantling North Korea's nuclear programs, normalizing U.S.-North Korean relations and (providing) economic and energy aid to the North, to establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. That being the case, the shortcut to progress would be to exchange mutually trustworthy special envoys to confirm each side's intentions and then immediately to enter into negotiations with the North. If there is prompt progress on the nuclear issue, it would be easy for Obama to concentrate on other international issues, including the Middle East conflict. The start of the Obama Administration carries significant meaning in that it has opened a new era of progressivism in modern world politics.”
