중도적인 한국일보 사설(2월 19일): “북한은 국제 사회의 우려와 경고에도 불구하고 대포동-2 미사일을 발포할 채비를 하고 있다. 한국과 미국은 클린턴 장관의 방문 기간 동안 북한의 도발적 행위에 반대하는 강한 메시지를 보내야 한다. 미래 지향적인 방식으로 양국의 유대관계를 강화하겠다는 화려한 수사에도 불구하고, 한국과 미국은 주요 현안들에 관한 많은 이견과 갈등요소를 지니고 있다. 우리는 이 회담을 통해 두 나라가 한미 FTA 비준과 국제 무대에서의 상호 협력을 포함한 양국 현안상에 서로간 이해를 확대하길 바란다.”

“아프가니스탄으로의 파병은 어림도 없다”

좌편향적인 한겨레신문 사설 (2월 19일):아프간에 추가적인 군대를 파병하는 미국의 결정은 실패한 이라크 점령과 같은 실수를 반복하는 우를 범할 수있다. 아프간 문제는 악화일로의 상황을 안정화하기 위해 추가적인 파병을 해야한다는 잘못된 견지를 취한다고 해결될 수없다. 만일 미국이 만약 미국이 알카에다를 고립시키고, 무력화하는 게 궁극적인 목표라면, 폭넚게 자국의 전략을 재점검하고 국제적인 합의를 모색해야 할 것이다. 무엇이 합리적이고 효과적인 아프간 정책인지에 대한 고심없이, 단순히 아프간에 주둔군을 증가시키고, 다른 나라에서 추가적인 파병을 요청하는 것은 잘못된 일이 될 것이다. 한국정부는 아프간에 지방재건팀 요원을 약 100명 정도로 그 수를 네 배로 증가시킬 방법을 검토하고 있다. 그러나, 이것이 결코 아프가니스탄에 한국군을 파병하기 위한 정지(整地) 작업이 되선 안 된다.

"Secretary Clinton's Visit to Seoul Should Enhance ROK-U.S.
Cooperation"

Moderate Hankook Ilbo editorialized (02/19): "North Korea is gearing
up to fire a Taepodong-2 missile despite the concerns and warnings
of the international community. The ROK and the U.S. should send a
strong message against North Korea's provocative behavior during
Secretary Clinton's visit. The ROK and the U.S., despite their
colorful rhetoric about strengthening bilateral ties in a
forward-looking manner, have had many differences of opinion and
conflicts over major pending issues. We hope that this meeting will
lead the two nations to expand their common ground on important
bilateral issues, including the ratification of the KORUS FTA and
mutual cooperation on the international stage."


Afghanistan

"Don't Even Think About Dispatching Troops to Afghanistan"

Left-leaning Hankyoreh Shinmun editorialized (02/19): "The U.S.
decision to send more troops to Afghanistan might lead the country
to repeat the same mistake it did in its failed occupation of Iraq.
The Afghanistan problem cannot be resolved by taking the
ill-considered position that more troops should be dispatched to
stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. If the U.S.
ultimately aims to leave al-Qaeda isolated and defenseless, it
should broadly reexamine its existing strategy and seek an
international consensus. It would be wrong (for the U.S.) to simply
increase its military presence in Afghanistan and ask for additional
troops from other countries, without thinking hard about what is a
reasonable and effective Afghanistan policy. The ROKG is reviewing
ways to quadruple the number of its Provincial Reconstruction Team
(PRT) personnel in Afghanistan to some 100. However, this should
never pave the way for the ROK to dispatch its troops to
Afghanistan."
