소셜미디어에서 활동하는 흑인 코미디언이자 작가인 브라이언 샤프가 최근의 스타벅스 체포 문제를 웃음 소재로 삼아 논란이 되고 있다.

그는 스타벅스에서 백인 종업원에게 ‘보상’을 언급하며 공짜 커피를 요구했고, 인터넷에 해당 동영상을 올렸다.

그는 종업원에게 “당신들이 인종차별주의자라고 들었다. 그래서 공짜 커피를 받으러 왔다”고 말했다.

샤프는 보상을 받으려고 왔다고 했고, 종업원은 이에 수긍했다. 종업원은 자신도 그 사건에 대해 봤다면서 문제의 스타벅스 지점과 거리를 두려고 했다. 종업원은 트위터를 통해 사건을 접했으며 말로 안 된다는 듯 그의 편에 섰다.

샤프는 커피를 기다리며 “이게 정의다. 이게 내가 이야기하고자 하는 것이다. 이게 훌륭한 고객 서비스이다”고 말했다.

샤프는 종업원에게 우유(여기서 백인을 비유한 듯한 것으로 추정)를 넣어줄 것을 요청했고, 종업원이 응해줬다. 그러면서 어떤 우유를 원하는지 물었고, 그는 ‘whole(지방을 빼지 않은 일반 우유)’이라고 답했다.

샤프는 커피가 나오는 동안 계속 인종차별과 관련한 말을 언급했다. ‘미국에서 흑인으로 살아가는 것에 대한 보상. 블랙 라이브즈 매터(Black Lives Matter, 흑인의 목숨도 소중하다, 흑인 민권 운동의 슬로건 중 하나)’라고 말했다.

종업은 커피에 더 추가하고 싶은 게 있는지 물었고, 샤프는 “캐러멜(여기서 흑인을 비유한 것으로 추정)을 넣으면 더 달콤해지지 않느냐”며 넣어 달라고 했다.

샤프는 공짜 커피를 받으면서 종업원의 이름을 물었고, 감사를 표했다. 종업원은 이 날이 마지막 근무이며, 학생인데 다음주에 기말시험이라 일을 그만 둔다고 말했다. 샤프는 행운을 빌어주고 매장을 나왔다.

샤프는 페이스북에 ‘흑인의 특권으로 공짜 커피를 얻었다. 나는 인종차별이 좋다. 미국에서만 가능한 일이다’라고 농담의 글을 올렸다.

이 동영상이 미국 내 여러 언론에 오르면서 대중들의 논란이 뜨겁다. 많은 사람들이 그의 행위를 따라 할 것이라는 우려의 글과 함께 흑인들의 특권과 백인들의 죄의식이 높아지는 현상에 대한 비판도 나오고 있다.

필라델피아의 한 지점에서 두 흑인이 체포되는 사건으로 인종차별 문제가 야기되면서 지난 화요일 스타벅스는 미국 내 8천개 직영 매장의 문을 닫고 17만5천명의 직원들에게 인종차별 방지에 대한 교육시키겠다고 발표했다.

인권 운동가들은 스타벅스를 보이콧 중이며, 약 1년전 CEO의 자리에 오른 케빈 존슨은 가장 큰 시험에 직면하게 됐다.

◈'This is justice': Black comedian demands complimentary Starbucks coffee as ‘reparations’ following racist boycott row - and the barista happily obliges

A black comedian decided to make light of the viral Starbucks arrest by asking a white employee at a different location for a free coffee, citing 'reparations.'

Bryan Sharpe, a comedian and author who goes by 'Hotep Jesus' on social media, posted the video of him walking in a coffee shop and asking for the cup.

'I heard y'all are racist, so I came to get my free coffee,' Sharpe is heard saying after greeting the employee, named Amanda.

'I saw that,' she responds before continuing to put distance between the two branches.
Sharpe asks if the store is participating in the fictional 'Starbucks reparations' and Amanda quickly obliges, clearly going along with the stunt.

She adds: 'I saw that on my Twitter feed last night and I was like 'What the F**k?''

While waiting for his coffee, Sharpe commends Amanda willingness to help out, stating 'this is justice, this is what I am talking about' and 'great customer service.'
The two continue talking about the incident in Philadelphia as another employee engages with them.

Sharpe then suggest that Amanda throw some milk into the cup and she obliges, yet again, asking what kind he would like. He responds 'whole.'
The comedian makes it a point to reiterate the cause for the joke.

'Reparations for being black in America. Black Lives Matter,' Sharp asserts.

'Black lives do matter,' Amanda quickly replies back at the comedian, before asking if he wants any flavor in his drink.

Sharpe states that he wants Caramel and ask if it'll make the coffee sweet.

'Do you want it to?' the employee responds before adding more.

As the exchange runs its course, Sharpe makes it a point to get the woman's name, adding that he is appreciative of her service.

'It is actually my last day here until the fall, Amanda informs the comedian.

'I'm a student and a writer and our finals are starting next week so I had to stop working so I could focus on my finals and go home for the summer.'

'I wish you the best,' Sharpe says before walking out of the store.

'Black privilege gets me free coffee,' Sharpe later says on Facebook, continuing with the prank. 'I love racism. Only in America.'
