Samsung Electronics announced on May 22 that it would open the AI research centers in Cambridge, UK (22nd), Toronto, Canada (24th) and Moscow, Russia (27th) in order to secure the excellent global manpower and technology. It already founded the ‘Korea AI research center’ under Samsung Research (SR) in November last year, and established an AI research center in the Silicon Valley California, US in January this year, and thus Samsung will have built the AI research outposts in a total of 5 locations. The Korea AI research center is expected to play a central role of the global AI research hub while building the AI related global network and leading industry-academia collaboration.
It is analysed that the promotion of the AI strategy by Samsung is a result largely reflecting Mr. Lee’s intent. His next move was predicted from the ‘AI visit’ in Europe and Canada in the last late March, his first trip after he was released on probation in the trial on an appeal case.
In addition, while Samsung Electronics has improved the overall profitability over the last year, its reliance on memory semiconductors such as D RAM and NAND flash has drastically increased. It has been contemplating its strategy internally while it has been on the back foot in the major smart phone market of India and China.
While Mr. Lee is busy creating the future business prospects after ending his hiatus, Samsung affiliates are giving him full support as reinforcements. According to the KOSPI first quarter results compiled by Korea Exchange, sales and operating profits of 5 Samsung affiliates belonging to top market value companies were shown to be improved substantially.
Samsung Electronics with the top market value in KOSPI recorded the sales of 60 trillion won and the operating profit of 15 trillion won, an increase of 19% and 58% year-to-year. Samsung BioLogics, the 7th in the market value, recorded the sales and operating profit of 1.21 trillion won and 100 billion won, an explosive increase of 21% and 193% year-to-year. The sales and operating profit of Samsung C&T Corporation, the 8th in the market value, increased year-to-year by 11% and 52%, respectively, to 74 trillion won and 209.2 billion won.
The performances of Samsung SDS and Samsung SDI, 17th and 21st in the market value, have been also improved. The sales of Samsung SDS were 2 trillion and 356.9 billion won, and its operating profit was 1.818 billion won, an increase of 9% and 23% year-to-year, respectively. Samsung SDI recorded the sales of 1 trillion and 908.9 billion won, and the operating profit of 72 billion won. The former increased by 46% year-to-year, and the operating profit turned into surplus.
A business official said “Samsung affiliates, top companies in terms of the market value, have recorded stable performances despite various small and large unfavourable news” and “Mr. Lee can focus on overseas markets because affiliates are doing really well.”

♦든든한 삼성 계열사들, 이재용 부회장의 후방 지원군 역할 '톡톡'
이재용 삼성전자 부회장이 1년여에 걸친 공백을 깨고 본격적인 움직임을 드러냈다. 삼성그룹 계열사들이 지원군 역할을 하는 가운데 이 부회장의 행보와 맞물려 삼성이 차기 동력으로 AI(인공지능)를 점찍었다는 평가가 나온다.
삼성전자는 AI 관련 글로벌 우수 인재와 기술을 확보하기 위해 영국 케임브리지(22일), 캐나다 토론토(24일), 러시아 모스크바(29일)에 AI 연구센터를 개소한다고 지난 22일 밝힌 바 있다. 지난해 11월 삼성리서치(SR) 산하에 ‘한국 AI 총괄센터’를 신설하고 올해 1월 미국 캘리포니아주 실리콘밸리에 AI 연구센터를 설립한 데 이어 5개 지역에 AI 연구 거점을 구축하는 셈이다. 한국 AI 총괄센터는 AI 관련 글로벌 네트워크 구축과 국내 산학협력을 주도하면서 전 세계 AI 연구의 허브 역할을 수행하게 될 것으로 전망된다.
삼성전자의 AI 전략 추진은 이 부회장의 의중이 크게 반영된 결과물이라는 분석이다. 이 부회장이 항소심에서 집행유예로 석방된 뒤 지난 3월 말 첫 해외출장 일정을 유럽과 캐나다의 ‘AI 탐방’으로 정하면서 차기 행보를 예고한 상태였다.
게다가 삼성전자는 지난해 1년 동안 전체 수익성은 좋아졌지만 D램, 낸드플래시 등 메모리 반도체에 대한 의존도가 크게 높아졌다. 인도 중국 등 주요 시장의 스마트폰 경쟁에서 밀리면서 내부적으로 전략수립에 상당한 고민을 해왔다.
공백기를 끝낸 이 부회장이 미래 먹거리를 창출하고자 동분서주 하는 동안 삼성 계열사들은 후방 지원군 역할을 든든히 하고 있다. 한국거래소가 집계한 코스피 1분기 실적에 따르면 시총 상위에 속한 삼성 계열사 5곳의 매출액과 영업이익이 모두 개선된 것으로 나타났다.
시총 1위 삼성전자는 매출액이 60조원, 영업이익이 15조원으로 전년 동기 대비 각각 19%, 58% 증가했다. 시총 7위인 삼성바이오로직스는 매출액과 영업이익이 각각 1조310억원, 1000억원으로 전년 동기 대비 각각 21%, 193% 폭증했다. 시총 8위인 삼성물산의 경우 매출액과 영업이익이 각각 74조원, 2092억원으로 11%, 52% 늘었다.
시총 17위, 21위인 삼성SDS와 삼성SDI의 실적도 호전됐다. 삼성SDS의 매출액은 2조3569억원, 영업이익은 1818억원으로 전년 동기 대비 각각 9%, 23% 올랐다. 삼성SDI는 같은 기간 매출액 1조9089억원, 영업이익 720억원을 기록했다. 매출액은 46% 증가했고 영업이익은 흑자 전환했다.
재계 관계자는 “시총 최상단에 있는 삼성그룹 계열사들은 크고 작은 악재 뉴스에도 불구하고 안정적인 실적을 기록하고 있다”며 “이 부회장이 해외시장에 주력하는 것도 계열사들이 힘을 내줬기 때문”이라고 평가했다.
