Power Utilities Shouldn't Underestimate The Power Of Tesla - Here's Why

Today’s electrical power utilities sector is dominated by a core group of companies which in effect operate regional and local monopolies. Moves to diversify the marketplace have been primarily limited to energy generation, and small scale, making them insubstantial when you consider that distribution is the main cost impediment. As long as there is centralized generation, without a competitive dynamic, the traditional power utility providers have no incentive to improve services or reduce prices.

Enter Tesla (TSLA). The electric-car company is working to decentralize power distribution and offer an alternative to today’s utility. Along with other companies in the sector, such as Solaredge (SEDG), Tesla is demonstrating that if the challenge goes unmet by traditional power utility companies, they’ll have their lunch stolen.

Like Amazon (AMZN) before it, Tesla is pursuing a two-pronged strategy. First, disrupt a legacy industry with a new model and approach, then expand to new industries by grabbing a stake in a key infrastructure sector.

Amazon did this when it took on the retail industry with its foray into e-commerce, and then expanded into data centers, using its technology platform as the foundation of both businesses. Tesla, meanwhile, took on the auto industry, reinventing electric cars as luxurious and powerful, albeit expensive for the average consumer. Today, those once unattainable vehicles are about to be offered on an affordable scale through the launch of “Tesla Model 3”, expanding the company’s customer set.

The company is now using those same tactics for its expansion into power utilities.

Tesla’s energy offering began with its Powerwall energy storage product, which again takes an existing technology and rebrands it, this time as a luxurious home-energy solution. When Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016, it enhanced its energy division, officially branding it “Tesla Energy”. Tesla’s goal is to create an all-in-one, sustainable energy option, with the potential to compete with the fossil-fuel giants. As a top solar-installer, the addition of SolarCity enables Tesla to combine its own home battery product with SolarCity’s offering. Factoring in its partnership with solar panel manufacturer, Panasonic, you’re left with an improved, viable solar roof product.

The question now is, can this product be made affordable enough to be installed on a massive scale? Elon Musk thinks so, and if Tesla’s electric-cars business is any indication, he has a good shot at being proven right. Equiped with high leverage connections and ample resources, Musk and Tesla are primed to go shot for shot with their established competitors. When this happens, the effect on existing power utilities infrastructure will be unprecedented.

Tesla is using the same playbook as a prior generation of upstarts did to the telecommunications industry in the early 1980s, when AT&T had a monopoly.  While attempts were made to break this down through regulation, it was the advance of wireless telecommunications which opened up real competition within telecom infrastructure. When America’s first commercial cellular service became available in 1983, “upstart” cellular companies staked claims in this new market, offering consumers a choice in service providers and effectively killing AT&T’s monopoly. Many of the original cellular companies joined the S&P, Dow and NASDAQ, including T-Mobile (today with a market Cap of $48 billion) and Apple Computers (market cap $922 billion).

Follow the markets long enough and you’ll know that history is a great indicator of things to come. The telecommunications industry provides a blueprint for what’s ahead in power utilities.

Tesla is not alone in this quest to grab a stake in power utilities. Multiple new entrants have the opportunity to dominate, offering investors the chance to get involved with future S&P stars.

One such company looking to disrupt the traditional power utilities sector is Solaredge.

The Israeli “smart inverter company” recently began expanding beyond its core power electronics products by producing a combination solar inverter and electric-vehicle charger. It also recently launched a virtual power plant system that turns its inverters and DC optimizers into networked energy resources.  Like Tesla, the company is aiming to create an all-in-one, competitive sustainable energy solution. Though working on a smaller-scale for now, Solaredge is well positioned, thanks to both its own products and key partnerships with other providers.

The utilities industry is a major part our traditional blue-chip portfolio, and its key stakeholders dominate one of the last bastions of major monopolies. As more and more companies break into the utility market, extensive power distribution networks will be relieved of growing demand, offering consumers the benefits of provider competition: choice, negotiating power, better service, and lower energy costs, while the company gains a steady annuity – it’s a case of simple economics.

The current leaders must be wary of this shifting power dynamic within their sector if they want to maintain their dominance, or they will be pushed out in favor of more competitive service offerings. Either way, consumers may rejoice as competition has come to the power utilities industry. Investors, meanwhile, can capitalize, not just with Tesla, but through newer upstarts who are looking to take the lead.
