전 세계 공익고발자들을 돕는 영국의 구호단체 커리지 재단(Courage Foundation)이 <위키리크스> 설립자 줄리안 어산지를 위한 법정 변호 경비 후원금 모금을 시작했다고 AFP를 비롯한 유럽 언론들이 10일(현지시간) 보도했다.

이 재단은 어산지가 2012년부터 망명 생활을 해온 런던 주재 에콰도르 대사관 내에서 심각한 위협에 처해있으며, 에콰도르 정부가 어산지를 금방이라도 대사관에서 내보낼 가능성이 있다고 밝혔다.

에콰도르 대통령 레닌 모레노는 지난 달 '위험에 처해질 수 있는 어떤 나라로도 어산지를 인도하지 않겠다'고 영국 정부가 보장했다면서, 어산지가 ‘거의 자유의 몸’으로 대사관을 떠날 길은 명확하다고 말했었다.

어산지와의 관계가 악화된 에콰도르 정부는 지난 수 개월 동안 그를 축출할 방법을 모색해왔다. 어산지는 최근 대사관 내에서의 인터넷 접속 규제에 대해 에콰도르 정부를 고소했다.

방대한 양의 미국 국무부와 펜타곤 문서들을 공개해서 세계적으로 유명해진 어산지는 현재 영국이 자신을 미국으로 송환해 미국 법정에 설 가능성에 불안해하고 있다.

전 세계 주재 미 대사관들이 본국과 주고받은 25만여 건의 전문들이 2010년 <위키리크스>에 공개됐으며, 이를 세계적인 주류 언론기관들이 보도했다. 이 문서들은 부시 행정부를 당혹스럽게 만들었으며, 다른 국가들과 미국과의 관계에 파장을 일으켰다.

어산지는 스웨덴에서의 성범죄 혐의로 기소된 후 스웨덴으로 송환되는 것을 피해 런던 주재 에콰도르 대사관에 들어갔었다. 이에 따라 대사관을 나서면 영국에서의 보석 조건 위반 혐의로 기소된다. 그러나 스웨덴에서의 혐의는 철회된 상태이다.

커리지 재단은 ‘어산지의 기소는 언론의 자유에 대한 심각한 공격이다. 범유럽북미의 변호 활동이 전 세계 지지자들로부터의 후원금을 필요로 할 것이다’라고 말했다. 그리고 기부금은 전적으로 <위키리크스>의 변호 활동을 후원하는 데 쓰일 것이라고 말했다.

미국 검찰은 지난 해 11월 실수로 어산지에 대한 고발장을 노출시켰다. 그러나 실제 무엇에 관한 고발인지 알려지지 않은 상태다. 

당시 이 고발장 사건으로 미국 정부가 어산지의 송환을 도모하고 있다는 것이 시사됐다. 미국의 어산지에 대한 관심은 로버트 뮐러 특검의 2016년 미 대선 러시아 개입 관련 수사와 관련이 돼있는 것으로 추측되고 있다.

Legal Aid Fund Launched for WikiLeaks Founder Assange

London: A British charity helping whistleblowers around the world on Thursday launched a legal aid fund for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, warning his expulsion from Ecuador's embassy in London "may be imminent".

The Courage Foundation said Assange's position in the embassy, where he has been living since seeking refuge there in 2012, was "under increasingly serious threat".

Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno last month said that "the way has been cleared for Mr Assange to take the decision to leave in near-liberty".

Moreno said Britain had guaranteed that the 47-year-old Australian would not be extradited to any country where his life would be in danger.

Ecuador has been seeking a way to terminate Assange's stay for several months, amid souring relations with its embassy guest, who recently sued Quito for restricting his internet access.

Assange, who gained international renown by publishing huge caches of hacked State Department and Pentagon files, has repeatedly expressed fear that Britain would extradite him to the United States to face charges there.

The 251,000 classified cables from US embassies around the world -- released by WikiLeaks in 2010 and published by leading international newspapers -- embarrassed the Bush administration in Washington and caused ructions in its bilateral relations with other countries.

In Britain, he faces prosecution for failing to meet his bail conditions after fleeing to the embassy to escape extradition to Sweden on sexual assault accusations that have since expired.

"Prosecuting Assange for publishing constitutes a major attack on press freedoms at large, and his trans-Atlantic legal defence will require contributions from supporters around the world," the foundation said.

The group said donations would "go solely to support the campaign to defend WikiLeaks' staff".

US prosecutors in November inadvertently revealed the existence of a sealed indictment against Assange, according to WikiLeaks, but it was not known what the actual charges were.

The possible indictment suggested that Washington will seek Assange's extradition if he leaves the embassy.
There is speculation that the US interest in Assange is connected to the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election that brought President Donald Trump to office.
