줄리안 어산지, 송환 논쟁 가운데 건강 악화되다

위키리크스 설립자 줄리안 어산지가 에콰도르 대사관에서 쫓겨나 미국으로 추방될 수 있는 우려가 커지고 있는 가운데 그의 건강이 좋지 않다고 데일리스타 등 영국 언론들이 보도하고 있다.

그는 체포 영장이 발부된 뒤 에콰도르 대사관에 망명을 신청하고 6년 동안 그 안에서 지내고 있으며, 미국으로 추방될 경우 위키리크스를 통한 폭로로 인해 스파이 혐의로 기소될 위기에 놓이게 된다. 

지난 달 에콰도르의 새 대통령 레닌 모레노는 어산지를 대사관에서 쫓아낼 수 있다고 시사한 바 있다. 모레노 대통령은 어산지를 '전 대통령이 물려준 골칫거리'라고 칭하며 해결방안을 찾아야 한다고 말했었다. 그런데 지난 이틀 동안 어산지의 건강이 악화됐다고 현재 전해지고 있다.

어산지를 지지하는 운동가 디아니 바레토는 "현 에콰도르 대통령이 아주 이상하게 행동하고 있다. 하루는 이런 말을 했다가 다른 날에는 또 다른 말을 한다. 미국 법정에서는 망명의 존엄성이 인정돼 왔는데, 이는 아주 중요하다. 모레노 대통령은 법적으로 망명을 철회하거나 어산지를 송환할 수 없다. 그가 대단히 오해하고 있는 것이다"고 말했다.

그는 "에콰도르는 미국 제국의 또 다른 식민지가 되려고 하고 있다. 박해와 위험이 존재하고 있는 나라에 사람들을 돌려보낼 수 없다. 전세계 지지자들과 법률 전문가들, 기자들까지 공직자들과 접촉하고 탄원서에 서명하고 있다"고 말했다.

Fears for Julian Assange as his ‘health WORSENS in last two days’ amid extradition battle

The WikiLeaks founder is said to be unwell as concerns were raised he could be forced out of the Ecuadorian embassy and deported to the US.

He has been holed up in the embassy building for the last six years after first claiming asylum after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

This was in response to rape allegations from a woman in Sweden.

But Assange has claimed he will be deported to the United States to face espionage charges over his WikiLeaks disclosures.

Last month, Ecuador’s new president, Lenin Moreno, hinted he could turf the Australian out of the embassy.

The leader of the South American country called Assange a problem he has “inherited” from his predecessor, adding a solution to his presence in the embassy must be found.

And now his health is said to have worsened in the last two days.

Diani Baretto, an activist campaigning for Assange, said: "The current president of Ecuador has done some very strange things. He says one thing one day, another thing another.

“The sanctity of asylum has been upheld by the inter-American court, which is a very serious thing. He cannot legally revoke asylum or have him [Assange] extradited. This is completely delusional.

“Ecuador is becoming another colony of the US empire.

"You can't return people to the country where persecution or danger exists. It's now up to the supporters, legal experts and journalists worldwide to contact elected officials and sign petitions.”

She added: “Sources are commenting that his [Assange's] has health worsened in the last couple of days.”
