일본이 처음으로 지진과 쓰나미로 파괴된 후쿠시마 원전에서 일했던 근로자가 방사능 피폭으로 사망했다는 것을 인정했다.

6일 로이터에 따르면 일본 후생노동성은 최근 폐암으로 사망한 50대 남자의 유가족들에게 보상금을 지급해야 된다고 결정을 내렸다.

이 근로자는 일본 내 원전들에서 경력을 쌓아왔고, 2011년 3월 도쿄 전력에서 운영하는 후쿠시마 다이이치 원전에서 원자로가 멜트다운된 뒤 현장에서 최소 두 번 일을 했다.

그리고 2016년 2월에 암 진단을 받았다고 당국은 전했다. 그는 최초의 후쿠시마 방사능 피폭 사망자로 기록됐다. 

후생노동성은 방사능 노출이 4명의 후쿠시마 근로자들에게 병을 일으켰다는 결론을 내렸다고 밝혔다.

2011년 3월 일본에서 진도 9.0의 지진이 발생해 쓰나미가 덮쳤으며 이로 인해 원전이 파괴되고 약 1만8,000명의 사망자를 냈다.

원전의 멜트다운 이후 16만명 이상이 집을 떠나야 했다.

수백명 사망의 원인은 재난 당시 피난 중의 혼돈과 이후 피난민들이 겪은 곤경과 정신적 트라우마 때문인 것으로 여겨져 왔으며, 일본 정부는 방사능이 원인이 아니라고 말했었다.

도쿄 전력은 후쿠시마 재난과 관련한 보상금을 요구하는 일련의 법적 소송에 직면해 있는 상황이다.

Japan acknowledges first radiation death among Fukushima workers

Japan has acknowledged for the first time that a worker at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami more than seven years ago, died from radiation exposure.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck in March 2011, triggering a tsunami that killed some 18,000 people and the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl 25 years earlier.

The Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry ruled on Friday that compensation should be paid to the family of the man in his 50s who died from lung cancer, an official told Reuters news agency by phone.

The worker had spent his career working at nuclear plants around Japan and worked at the Fukushima Daiichi plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power at least twice after the March 2011 meltdowns at the station.

He was diagnosed with cancer in February 2016, the official said.

The ministry had previously ruled exposure to radiation caused the illnesses of four workers at Fukushima, the official said.

More than 160,000 people were forced from their homes after the meltdowns at the plant.

Hundreds of deaths have been attributed to the chaos of evacuations during the crisis and because of the hardship and mental trauma refugees have experienced since then but the government had said that radiation was not a cause.

Tokyo Electric is facing a string of legal cases seeking compensation over the disaster.
