It struck me that there is no need to speak if looking at its name is so often mentioned in government ministries. Up to this point, those who follow the news faithfully will guess easily this is about Samsung Group.
Unfortunately, this is a reality. While negative issues related to Samsung have been raised, Korea’s representative company has fallen at some point to the status of the origin of long-standing evil and corruptions. Now a familiar shout is heard. It is the argument for the ‘Uselessness of Samsung’. Of course, as the argument for the ‘Uselessness of Samsung’ is getting more support, the fact that Samsung has been supporting national economy tends to be ignored at least partially.
Though it is the same old story, it was Samsung Electronics that filled the void while the existing major industries such as shipbuilding and motor industry hit the bottom. Semiconductor, the main product of Samsung Electronics, accounts for 17.4% of the Korea’s entire export. The power of a single product is this much.
It will be a big mistake if you think semiconductor's performance has made only Samsung flourished. It is well known that the single item of semiconductor not only contributed significantly to achieving an economic growth rate of 3%, but also had a great impact on the tax revenue for income-led growth and welfare expansion of the new government.
The performance of Samsung Electronics creates an illusion as if most of Korean companies are performing well, like sailing downwind. Sales of 544 KOSPI listed firms that settled accounts in December based on consolidated financial statements recorded 463 trillion won in the first quarter of this year, up 4.82% year-to-year. The operating profit was 42 trillion won and net profit 32 trillion won, up 9.96% and 2.63% year-to-year, respectively.
Here, the imaginary number created by Samsung Electronics exists. Excluding Samsung Electronics, the operating profit and net profit were 27 trillion won and 21 trillion won, down 6.43% and 13.01% year-to-year, respectively. The boom was actually an optical illusion caused by Samsung Electronics.
Even though it has a lot of capabilities, it is only reasonable to take the rod of love if there is a serious flaw in morality. If unlawful acts that Samsung has committed so far are revealed clearly, strict judgment and punishment must follow.
However, somehow Samsung is often under crossfire of public opinions even with the suspicion only. Though the facts have not been clarified, sometimes it is defined as a conclusion.
Let's simply take a look at the case of Samsung BioLogics. The US Biogen announced that it would exercise the call option for Samsung Bioepis, which has been making the atmosphere that it might not be an accounting fraud, but this is not important for the public who have already recognized Samsung as a public enemy.
Reasonable criticism is what supports capitalism. It is obvious that transparency should accompany this process. The reason that Samsung has been so much blamed was perhaps the backlash of insufficient transparency. However, even a huge strong dinosaur would feel sour at the blames that have crossed the line.
It is necessary to take a look at the economic role and value of Samsung. It is more so because the representative company that has been grown after all the troubles may be forced to fall into an unescapable pit.

♦삼성이 없다면... 삼성과 대한민국 경제
여기저기 욕을 안 하는 사람이 없다. 분식회계, 노조 와해 등 최근 언론에 비친 모습을 보면 욕을 먹지 않는 게 이상할 정도다. 수시로 정부 부처에서 이름이 호명될 정도면 말 다한 것 아닌가 하는 생각마저 든다. 세상 돌아가는 일에 조금이라도 관심 있는 사람은 여기까지만 얘기해도 삼성그룹 이야기라는 걸 어렵지 않게 짐작할 것이다.
안타깝게도 이게 현실이다. 삼성과 관련한 부정적 이슈가 연일 터지는 동안 대한민국 대표 기업은 어느 순간부터 적폐와 비리의 온상으로 전락했다. 이쯤 되니 익숙한 외침이 들려온다. ‘삼성 무용론’이 바로 그것이다. 물론 삼성 무용론이 힘을 얻을수록 삼성이 국가 경제를 지탱해 왔다는 사실은 일정 부분 감춰지기 마련이다.
뻔한 얘기지만 조선과 자동차 등 기존 주력산업이 바닥을 찍는 동안 빈자리를 메꿔준 것은 삼성전자였다. 삼성전사의 대표상품인 반도체는 대한민국 전체 수출의 17.4%를 차지한다. 단일 품목의 파급력이 이 정도다.
반도체의 활약이 단순히 삼성만 살찌웠다고 생각한다면 큰 오산이다. 반도체라는 품목만으로 경제성장률 3%를 달성하는 데 크게 이바지한 것은 물론 새 정부의 소득주도 성장과 복지 확대를 위한 세수 확보에도 지대한 영향을 미쳤다는 점은 잘 알려진 사실이다.
삼성전자의 활약은 마치 대다수 국내 기업들이 순풍에 돛 달고 잘나가는 것처럼 착각하게 만든다. 지난 16일 한국거래소와 한국상장회사협의회에 따르면 코스피 12월 결산법인 544곳의 올해 1분기 연결재무제표 기준 매출액은 463조원으로 전년 동기보다 4.82% 증가했다. 영업이익은 42조원, 순이익은 32조원으로 같은 기간 각각 9.96%, 2.63% 늘었다.
여기에는 삼성전자라는 허수가 존재한다. 삼성전자를 제외한 영업이익과 순이익은 각각 27조원, 순이익은 21조원으로 전년 동기 대비 6.43%, 13.01% 감소했다. 호황으로 비춰진 건 사실상 삼성전자 착시효과였던 셈이다.
물론 제아무리 능력이 많더라도 도덕성에 심각한 결함이 있다면 사랑의 매를 드는 게 합당하다. 지금껏 삼성이 저지른 불법과 탈법이 명명백백히 드러난다면 엄중한 심판과 조치가 뒤따라야 한다는 뜻이다.
하지만 어째서인지 의혹만으로도 삼성은 여론의 집중포화를 당하기 일쑤다. 사실 여부가 명확히 밝혀지지 않았음에도 이미 결론난 사안인 것처럼 규정되기도 한다.
당장 삼성바이오로직스만 해도 미국 바이오젠이 삼성바이오에피스에 대한 콜옵션을 행사하겠다고 밝히면서 분식회계가 아닐 수 있다는 분위기가 조성되고 있지만 이미 삼성을 공공의 적으로 인식한 대중들에게 이 같은 내용은 둘째 문제다.
합리적인 비판은 자본주의를 지탱하는 원천이다. 이 과정에서 투명성이 동반되어야 함은 자명한 사실이다. 삼성이 손가락질 받던 것도 어쩌면 투명성에서 미흡함을 드러낸 반대급부였다고도 할 수 있다. 하지만 맷집 좋은 공룡이라도 선을 넘는 비난은 속 쓰린 법이다.
삼성전자의 경제적 역할과 가치에 대해서도 살펴 볼 필요가 있다. 어렵게 키운 대표 기업을 다시 헤어날 수 없는 수렁에 빠뜨릴 수 있다는 점에서 더욱 그렇다.
