<위키리크스> 설립자 줄리안 어산지가 에콰도르 대사관에서 내보내질 것이라는 소문이 돌고 며칠 지나지 않아, 무장한 경찰관이 대사관 건물에 들어가는 모습이 영상으로 찍혔다고 익스프레스를 비롯한 영국 매체들이 7일(현지시간) 보도했다. 

어산지는 2012년부터 런던 주재 에콰도르 대사관에서 망명 생활 중이고, 미국 당국이 미 정부 비밀 문서 유출에 관해 <위키리크스>와 어산지를 조사 중이다.

<위키리크스>가 트위터를 통해 공유한 해당 영상은 두 경찰관이 건물 안으로 들어갔다가 잠시 뒤에 다시 나오는 모습이 포착된 것이다.

이 경찰관들의 등장은 어산지가 곧 대사관 밖으로 축출될 것이라는 추측이 나오고 이틀 뒤에 일어난 일이다.
 
<위키리크스>는 지난주 트위터를 통해 에콰도르 정부 측 고위급 정보원이 정부의 해외 자금 스캔들 보도를 빌미로 어산지가 몇 시간 또는 며칠 내로 대사관에서 추방될 것이며, 영국 당국과 그의 체포에 이미 합의했다고 말했다고 전했다.

에콰도르 정부는 어산지가 즉시 대사관에서 쫓겨날 것이라는 보도를 부인했다. 익명의 에콰도르 관료가 어산지의 미래에 대해 결정된 것이 없다고 말하면서 혼란은 가중됐다.

에콰도르 외교부는 자료에 입각하지 않은 루머, 의견, 추측에는 대응하지 않는다는 입장을 내놓고 있을 뿐이다.

지난 주말에는 어산지의 지지자들이 지지 운동을 펼치기 위해 대사관 건물 밖에 모였다. 어산지를 지지하고 있는 미국 영화배우 파멜라 앤더슨은 트위터를 통해 주말 동안 대사관 주변에 대대적으로 모여 지지 운동을 벌인 사람들에 대해 진실이 승리하기 위해 이는 알려져야 한다고 말했다.

<위키리크스>는 아프간전과 이라크전 관련 문서들을 공개했는데, 2010년 미 연방정부가 이에 대해 어산지를 수사하기 시작했다.

같은 해 스웨덴에서의 성범죄 혐의로 어산지에게 국제 체포 영장이 발부됐는데, 어산지는 혐의를 부인하며, 미 정부 비밀 문서 공개로 인해 스웨덴에서 구속되면 미국으로 송환될 것이라고 말했다.

스웨덴 당국은 이후 어산지의 성범죄 혐의를 기각했고, 체포 영장을 철회했다.

Julian Assange latest: Armed officers swoop on fugitive hacker’s London embassy hideout

Days after rumours swirled that the WikiLeaks founder would be forced out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, video footage was captured of the two officers going into the building. Mr Assange has been in the embassy since 2012, after being granted asylum there after the US authorities said it wanted to speak to him with regards to leaked secret documents. In the images shared on Twitter by WikiLeaks and captured by Ruptly, the pair are seen entering the building before leaving a short while later.

The police’ appearance comes after two days of intense speculation over whether he will be made to leave the embassy or not.

On Saturday, his protesters swarmed the building to show their support for the Australian-born programmer.

He has been in the London building after seeking asylum there as Swedish police wanted to question him over allegations of sexual assault and rape.

US police are also believed to want to speak to him.

WikiLeaks tweeted on Thursday night: “A high-level source within the Ecuadorian state has told WikiLeaks that Julian Assange will be expelled within 'hours to days' using the INA papers offshore scandal as a pretext and that it already has an agreement with the UK for his arrest.”

However confusion surrounds Mr Assange, after an unnamed Ecuadorian official said no decision had been made on Mr Assange's future.

American TV star Pamela Anderson, who is a vocal support of Mr Assange, tweeted her thoughts on the protestors who came out in force over the weekend.

She said: “For the truth to prevail, it must be known and recognised.”

She added a black and white photo of Mr Assange smiling into the camera. Ecuador's government said last night that it rejected reports that it would imminently expel Mr Assange.

Addressing the speculation, Ecuador’s foreign ministry would only say it “doesn’t comment on rumours, theories or conjectures that don’t have any documented backing”.

In 2010, an international arrest warrant was issued for Mr Assange amid the sexual assault claims in Sweden.

Denying the allegations, Assange said he would be extradited from Sweden to the US because of his role in the publication of secret documents.

The leaks included Afghanistan and Iraq war logs, a video entitled ‘Collateral Murder’ and CableGate.

These documents were made public and the federal government of the US in 2010 launched the criminal investigation against him.

Swedish prosecutors dropped the rape allegations against Mr Assange and applied to revoke his European arrest warrant.
