'In the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, go for a quantum jump by the global cooperation!'

CEO of Hanwha Group Mr. Kim Seung-yeon’s eldest son Kim Dong-kwan, the Executive Director of Hanwha Q Cells, and his second son Kim Dong-won, the Managing Director of Hanwha Life Insurance, who will lead the third generation management of Hanwha Group succeeding him are endeavoring to create synergistic effects with other businesses through the expansion of global networks.

These third generations have a strategy to create new markets and explore various new business platforms through cooperation with global companies. This aims to not only make a ‘quantum jump’ of the group but also seek the direction of change in which the group takes to advance to a ‘limitless company’ leading the future.

Early this year, CEO Mr. Kim Seung-yeon emphasized in his New Year address “The world is heading toward the age of another industrial revolution beyond the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the competition of companies to lead the future business is becoming even more fierce.”

Mr. Kim called for a change to move to a limitless company, mentioning 'The next 10 years could determine the success or failure of Hanwha as the change in areas that we thought were entirely irrelevant can hit our main business like a tsunami in no time'.

In line with Mr. Kim's blueprint, his eldest son Kim Dong-kwan, Executive Director of Hanwha Q CELLS, his second son Kim Dong-won, Managing Director of Hanwha Life Insurance, Shin Hyun-woo, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, and Kim Yong-hyun, CEO of Hanwha Asset Management, participated and engaged in various activities in the Davos Forum along with Mr. Kim.
 
They attended official sessions and forums in this event under the theme of the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' while having about 50 business meetings with global leaders from all over the world to focus on finding ways to improve their global competitiveness.

Hanwha Group rented the whole Concordia Hotel near the Congress Center where major events were held, exposing the brand ‘HANWHA’ on the outer wall of the hotel, and advertising Hanwha on the electronic display board at the entrance to the driveway to Davos. Hanwha Group gave people attending meetings a souvenir containing the mini brochure of Hanwha Group, and a book clip and a pen that symbolized Hanwha Group's major businesses wrapped in a traditional cloth.

At the conference room and the restaurant at the Concordia Hotel that Hanwha Group used, Hanwha Group provided 12 different Korean dishes and refreshments including the ginseng chicken soup with abalones prepared by Plaza Hotel chefs whenever meeting with global key people, contributing to the spread of the Korean food culture.

Executive Director Mr. Kim Dong-kwan met political and business leaders, including the King of Belgium and the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of Malaysia, as well as energy related entrepreneurs, and exchanged opinions on how to spread and develop renewable energy such as solar power. He also had a meeting with Anna Trabovich, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Grid Singularity, which specialized in blockchain in Germany. On the 24th, he also held a meeting with Tran Tuan Anh, the Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam. 

Belgium aims to decommission its nuclear power plants completely by 2025 and to increase 20% of its total electricity production with renewable energy by 2030. During the meeting with King Philippe of Belgium, Mr. Kim Dong-kwan discussed the prospect of renewable energy markets in Europe and the efforts needed to solve the global challenges of global warming in the future.

Managing Director Kim Dong-won, who has been in charge of overseas and future innovation business of Hanwha Life Insurance since December last year, focused on identifying the global trends in overseas investment and digital innovation strategies.

He met Laurence D. Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the world's largest asset management company on 23rd, and they discussed how the US Trump Administration's economic policies would affect global asset management sector. He also had a meeting with Raj Ganguly, the founder of B Capital, which invests in startup companies in Southeast Asia.

Hanwha Aerospace Seeking the 'Global Aviation Engine', and Hanwha Asset Management seeking the 'Global Financial Investment Strategy'

Shin Hyun-woo, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, attended a session where global aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus and Lockheed Martin attended, and held business meetings with companies related to the aviation industry. Through this, he learned the direction of change in the global aviation industry, and focused on finding strategies that would enable Hanwha Aerospace to become a global aviation engine company.

Kim Yong-hyun, CEO of Hanwha Asset Management, held business meetings with global asset management companies such as Barings and The Blackstone Group. He also focused on understanding the trends in the global financial industry and finding directions for future investment strategies, while attending a session where CEOs of global financial institutions such as Blackstone and Zurich Insurance discussed theme of 'Role of the financial industry in the era of unbalanced globalization'.

▣ Hanwha Group & Davos Forum

It was in 2010 when the Hanwha Group first attended the Davos Forum. Executive Director Kim Dong-kwan, who participated in the Davos Forum with CEO Kim Seung-yeon at the time, has been participating in the Davos Forum for 10 consecutive years since then.

Through this, he has been following the trend of global economic change based on his interactions with key figures as well as global business executives, and these activities have been evaluated as the main foundation for Hanwha Q Cells to lead the global market.

Mr. Kim Dong-kwan proposed the donation of solar modules at the Davos Forum in 2012, as an intent of joining the city of Davos leading eco-friendly green growth and the Davos Forum's eco-friendly spirit. The 280 kW solar facility on the roof of the Davos Congress Center was completed in December of the following year 2013.

In 2013, he was named the 'Young Global Leader'. 'Young Global Leaders' are a gathering of global leaders under the age of 40 selected by the Davos Forum among young global leaders in various fields, including business, academia and politics.

He has also been active in the Davos Forum official session. Since 2014, he has been a panelist in energy-related sessions and has been discussing and commenting on the direction of renewable energy. He also held a forum on the direction of global energy policy with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) for three years from 2016 to 2018. The GGGI is known as an international organization that most actively supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Kim Dong-won, the Managing Director of Hanwha Life Insurance, attended this year's Davos Forum for the third time after 2016 and 2017. During his two attendances, Mr. Kim focused on exploring FinTech in the financial sector and the new financial order. Through meetings with young entrepreneurs, he has focused on finding future growth engines for Asia, fostering domestic start-ups, and finding ways to advance to overseas markets.

Mr. Kim Dong-won was selected as the Young Business Leader by the Boao Forum in China, which is termed an Asian version of the Davos Forum, in 2016, and attended it as an official panel for the Young Leaders Roundtable (YLR).

‘4차산업혁명시대, 글로벌 협력으로 퀀텀 점프를 추진하라!’

김승연 한화그룹 회장에 이어 3세 경영을 이끌 두 아들인 장남 김동관 한화큐셀 전무, 차남 김동원 한화생명 상무 형제가 글로벌 네트워크를 확대를 통한 기업간 시너지 창출에 총력을 펼치고 있다.

3세들은 세계적인 기업들과의 협력을 통해 새로운 시장을 창출하고, 다양한 신규 사업 플랫폼을 개척해나간다는 전략이다. 이를 통해 그룹이 ‘퀀텀 점프’하는 것은 물론 미래를 선점하는 ‘무한기업’으로 나아가기 위한 변화의 방향을 모색한다는 것이다.

한화그룹 김승연 회장은 올초 신년사에서 “세계는 이미 4차산업혁명을 넘어 그 이상의 또 다른 산업혁명시대를 향하고 있으며, 미래를 선점하기 위한 각 기업들의 경쟁은 더욱 치열해지고 있다”고 강조했다.

김 회장은 “전혀 무관하다고 생각했던 분야에서의 변화가 순식간에 우리의 주력사업을 쓰나미처럼 덮쳐버릴 수 있는 시대가 온 만큼 앞으로의 10년이 한화 성패를 좌우할 수 있다”며 무한기업으로 나아가기 위한 변화를 주문한 바 있다.

김 회장의 청사진에 발맞춰, 맏아들인 김동관 한화큐셀 전무와 차남 김동원 한화생명 상무를 비롯해 신현우 한화에어로스페이스 대표, 김용현 한화자산운용 대표 등은 지난 22일 스위스 현지에서 개막한 다보스포럼에 김 회장의 참석해 활발한 활동을 펼쳤다.
 
이들은 ‘4차 산업혁명’을 주제로 열린 이번 행사에서 공식 세션과 토론에 잇따라 참석하는 한편 전세계에서 온 글로벌 리더들과 50여차례의 비즈니스 미팅을 갖는 등 글로벌 경쟁력 제고 방안을 강구하는데 집중했다.

한화그룹은 주요 행사가 열리는 콩그레스센터 인근의 콩코디아 호텔을 통째로 빌려 호텔 외벽에 ‘HANWHA’ 브랜드를 노출하고, 다보스 진입도로 입구 전광판에 한화 광고를 게재했다. 미팅 상대방들에게는 한화그룹 미니 브로슈어, 한화그룹의 주요사업을 형상화한 북클립과 펜 등이 담긴 기념품을 전통 보자기에 담아 선물했다.

한화그룹이 이용한 콩코디아 호텔에 마련된 회의실과 식당에서 글로벌 주요 인사들과의 미팅 때마다 플라자호텔 셰프들이 직접 준비한 전복삼계탕 등 12가지에 이르는 한식과 다과를 제공해 한류 음식문화 전파에도 일조했다.

김동관 한화큐셀 전무는 벨기에 국왕, 말레이시아 통상산업부 장관 등 전세계에서 온 정계 인사들뿐만 아니라 등 에너지 관련 기업인들을 만나며, 태양광 등 신재생 에너지의 확산 및 발전 방안에 대한 의견을 나누는데 집중했다.

김동관 전무는 22일 필립(H.M Philippe) 벨기에 국왕, 다렐 레이킹(Darrell Leiking) 말레이시아 통상산업부 장관 면담을 가졌다. 24일 오후에는 쩐 뚜엉 아잉(Tran Tuan Anh) 베트남 산업무역부 장관과도 미팅을 가질 예정이다.

벨기에는 2025년까지 원자력발전소를 완전 폐기하고, 2030년까지 전체 전력 생산량 가운데 신재생에너지로 20%를 확충하려는 목표를 갖고 있다. 김동관 전무는 필립 벨기에 국왕과의 면담에서 유럽의 신재생 에너지 시장전망과 향후 지구 온난화라는 전지구적 과제를 해결하기 위해 필요한 노력에 대한 의견을 나눴다.

말레이시아 통상산업부 장관 및 베트남 산업무역부 장관과의 미팅에서는 동남아시아 지역에서 태양광 확대를 위한 협력방안을 논의했다.

김동관 전무는 22일에는 에너지 시장에서 블록 체인 활용 플랫폼을 제공하는 독일 그리드 싱귤래리티(Grid Singularity)의 애나 트라보비치(Ana Trobovich) COO(Chief Operating Officer)와 미팅을 가졌다. 미팅에서는 향후 에너지 및 전력 시장에 찾아올 변화에 대비하기 위한 IT 기술과 블록체인 활용 가능성에 대한 의견이 오갔다. 신재생 에너지 분야를 선도하고 있는 한화큐셀이 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는지에 대한 논의도 이뤄졌다.

2018년 12월부터 한화생명의 해외총괄 및 미래혁신총괄 업무를 맡게 된 김동원 한화생명 상무는 해외 투자 및 디지털 혁신 전략에 대한 글로벌 추세를 파악하는데 주력했다. 새로운 혁신 기술 및 디지털 기술을 개발 중인 기업들과의 미팅도 잇따라 가졌다.

김동원 상무는 23일 세계 최대 자산운용사인 블랙락(BlackRock)의 CEO인 로렌스 핑크(Laurence D. Fink)와 면담을 가졌다. 이 자리에서는 미국 트럼프 행정부의 경제정책이 글로벌 자산운용 분야에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 것인지에 대한 심도깊은 논의와 함께 글로벌 경제 전망에 대한 서로간의 의견도 나눠졌다.

김동원 상무는 23일 동남아시아에서 스타트업 기업에 투자를 하는 비캐피탈(B Capital)의 창업자 라지 갱굴리(Raj Ganguly)와도 미팅을 가졌다.

이어 싱가포르 경제개발청(Singapore Economic Development Board)의 배 스완 진(Beh Swan Gin) 회장과도 미팅을 갖고, 혁신이 필요한 싱가포르 기업들에 대한 투자 지원 방안에 대해 의견을 나눴다. 김동원 상무와 배 회장은 지속가능한 경제성장을 창출해야 하는 기업의 사명에 대해 공감대를 이루기도 했다. 이 자리에는 김동관 한화큐셀 전무도 함께 했다.

신현우 한화에어로스페이스 대표는 보잉, 에어버스, 록히드마틴 등 세계적 항공기 제작사들이 참가한 세션에 참석하고 항공산업 관련 회사들과의 비즈니스 미팅을 진행했다. 이를 통해 글로벌 항공산업의 변화 방향을 파악하고, 한화에어로스페이스가 글로벌 항공엔진 회사로 도약할 수 있는 전략을 모색하는데 중점을 뒀다.

김용현 한화자산운용 대표는 베어링, 블랙스톤 등 세계적 자산운용사들과의 비즈니스 미팅을 잇따라 진행했다. 또한 블랙스톤, 취리히보험 등 세계적 금융기관의 최고 경영자들이 ‘불균형적 세계화 시대의 금융산업 역할’이란 주제로 토론을 나눈 세션에 참석하는 등 글로벌 금융산업의 트렌드를 파악하고 향후 투자 전략의 방향성을 찾는데 집중했다.

한화그룹이 다보스포럼에 처음 참가한 건 2010년. 이때 김승연 회장과 함께 다보스포럼에 참가했던 김동관 전무는 그 이후 올해까지 10년 연속 다보스포럼에 참가하고 있다.

이를 통해 세계적 기업의 경영인들뿐만 아니라 주요 인사들과의 교류를 바탕으로 세계경제 변화의 흐름을 쫓아가고 있으며, 이러한 활동들은 한화큐셀이 세계시장을 선도하는데 주요한 밑거름이 돼왔다는 평가를 받고 있다.

김동관 전무는 2012년 다보스포럼 현장에서 친환경 녹색성장을 주도하고 있는 다보스시와 다보스포럼의 친환경 정신에 동참한다는 취지로 태양광 모듈 기증을 제안한 바 있다. 다보스 콩그레스센터 지붕의 280kW짜리 태양광 설비는 다음해인 2013년 12월에 설치가 완료됐다.

2013년에는 ‘영 글로벌 리더’(Young Global Leader)로 선정되기도 했다. ‘영 글로벌 리더’는 다보스포럼이 선정한 40세 미만의 글로벌 리더간의 모임으로, 다보스포럼이 비즈니스∙학문∙정치 등 각 분야의 젊은 글로벌 리더들 중에서 선정한다.

다보스포럼 공식 세션에서도 활발한 활동을 계속하고 있다. 2014년 이후 꾸준히 에너지 관련 세션에 패널리스트로 참여하며, 신재생에너지의 나아갈 방향에 대해 토론하며 의견을 제시하고 있다. 2016년부터 2018년까지 3년째 GGGI(Global Green Growth Institute)와 함께 글로벌 에너지 정책의 방향에 관련한 포럼을 개최하기도 했다. GGGI는 UN의 지속가능발전목표(SDGs)를 가장 적극적으로 지원하고 있는 국제기구로 알려져 있다.

김동원 한화생명 상무는 2016년과 2017년에 이어 올해 세번째로 다보스포럼에 참석했다. 그 동안 두 차례의 참석에서 김동원 상무는 금융업에서의 핀테크와 새로운 금융질서 등을 발굴하는데 주력했다. 젊은 창업자들과의 미팅을 통해 아시아의 미래 성장 동력, 국내 스타트업의 육성 및 해외 진출에 대한 방안들을 찾는데 주력해왔다.

김동원 상무는 지난 2016년 아시아판 다보스포럼이라고 불리는 중국 보아오 포럼이 선정하는 ‘영 비즈니스 리더’(Young Business Leader)로 선정돼, 영 리더스 라운드테이블(YLR) 공식 패널로 참석한 바 있다.
